Anambra State Police Command have arrested some of its men, who were involved in the shooting of a motorist at Tarzan Junction, Nkpor, along Enugu-Onitsha Express road on Friday.
This was made known in a statement made available by the state command.
The police also narrated its version of the story, explaining that a police patrol team had stopped the yet unidentified victim who was driving in a Camry vehicle for a routine check.
The statement reads;
“However, the driver failed to stop as directed. He was chased by the police team from Dennis memorial Grammar School (DMGS) roundabout, Onitsha and subsequently accosted at Tarzan Junction, Nkpor as a result of traffic build-up.”
When the police proceeded to search the vehicle, the victim resisted and in the ensuing scuffle was shot by an officer.
The statement added;
“In a bid to search the vehicle properly, a melee ensued and the driver was shot by Police. Unfortunately the driver died on the spot. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed fifteen (15) bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp,”
The shooting and killing of the motorist had infuriated people around who went on to set ablaze a security pick-up van that was seen approaching the junction.
The driver of the van managed to escaped unscathed. But a motor boy on an approaching trailer wasn’t so lucky as he jumped down from his trailer upon sighting the angry mob and was crushed to death by an oncoming vehicle.
The police however assured that the officers involved in the carnage have been arrested and in custody.
“All the police Officers involved in this unfortunate incident are in custody and undergoing interrogation. We wish to also appeal to members of the public especially those who witnessed the incident to feel free to help provide information to the police to help in arresting the fleeing hit and run driver,” the statement reads.
